AVBA - People with passion
Introducing....
The AVBA Board
Mark Amott B App Sci, B Eng, M Eng, MBA
Mark has a background in corporate settings and has transitioned to veterinary business management through a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Mt Eliza Business School (now part of Melbourne Business School), Melbourne, Australia. Mark has drawn heavily on both his strong practical knowledge of the veterinary industry, gained through lifelong exposure to veterinary practice through family ties, as well as his corporate experience since his entry to the veterinary field in 2003. Since this time Mark has worked in the strategic and operational business aspects of veterinary emergency and referral and carries out the business function at the Southern Animal Referral Centre, of which he is a founding member and director. Mark is currently in the latter stages of completing a Master of Marketing at Melbourne Business School.
Jane Bindloss RVN
Over the past 15 years, Jane has held a variety of executive and committee positions within the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia and the National Industry Advisory Group for Veterinary Nurses. She sits on the Companion Animal Working Group for the DAFF-convened Australian Animal Welfare Strategy.
Jane was a founding member of the AVPMA. She was finalist in the Telstra Business Women’s Awards and has received the BSAVA’s Veterinary Nursing Award and the AVA’s Meritorious Service Award.
Debbie Delahunty BVSc(Hons), CMAVA
Debbie owns an ASAVA accredited Hospital of Excellence in Horsham, Victoria.
Debbie, a practising veterinarian who has developed a strong interest in practice management over the last 10 years, will soon complete the UNEP Diploma of Practice Management (Veterinary).
Debbie was a member of the AVPMA committee for a number of years and President from 2004 to 2007.
Andrew Dudgeon BSc, BVMS, GCM(VP)
Andrew worked in mixed and small animal practices in Tasmania before starting a practice of his own. Now known as Tasmanian Animal Hospitals, the practice comprises three hospitals, nine FTE vets, including four partners, and 25 non-veterinary staff.
Andrew has made a long-term contribution to the AVA via the Tasmanian Division and AVPMA. He was AVPMA Conference Convenor from 2006 to 2008; being responsible for the management stream of the AVA conference, the Summer Seminar Series and the inaugural AVPMA conference.
Mark Ethell BVSc, MVetClinStud, MACVSc, FACBS, Diplomate ACVS
Mark divides his work time between practice and practice management. Mark provides specialist referral services in equine surgery and is Managing Director of four veterinary practices in Canberra, which employ 20 vets and 60 support staff.
Mark is a long-term contributor to the Australian Veterinary Association including two years as Policy Councillor. He has also served via the AVA via AVPMA and Equine Veterinarians Australia. Mark is currently President-Elect of the AVA, ACT Division.
Diederik Gelderman BVSc(Hons), MVS
On graduation, Dick immediately commenced a two person mixed practice. He went on to design and build an ‘A’ class Hospital before obtaining his PennHip certification and completing his MVS.
In the last 10 years Dick has become more and more focused on practice management and business management. He now practises only two days a week. The rest of his time is devoted to lecturing, holding workshops, coaching and consulting with businesses, both veterinary and non-veterinary, within Australia and overseas.
Lindsay Hay BVSc, MVS, MACVSc, GCM(VP), AIMM
Lindsay has worked in companion animal practice in Sydney since graduation. He has spent the last 30 years dealing with the learning bug, initially with surgery and medicine and for the past 10 years with practice management.
A founding member of the AVPMA and President for two terms, Lindsay’s outstanding contributions to the profession have been acknowledged via the AVA’s Meritorious Service Award and the ASAVA Practitioner of the Year Award.
Chris Hibburt BVSc, MBA, FAICD
Chris currently spends his professional time as a dairy farm business and industry adviser. He is a board member of Lyppard Australia and an investor in a dairy farm.
A long-time contributor to the profession via the AVA, Cattle Vets and AVPMA, Chris has been presented with the AVA Meritorious Service Award.
David MacPhail DVM, MBA
Following his graduation from the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Canada, David’s early experiences were in equine racetrack practice. After moving to Australia, he switched to solely companion animals. A growing interest in practice development led him to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Management (along with several other AVBA directors) and he followed this up by completing his Master of Business Administration degree at the International Graduate School of Business in Adelaide.
Although still involved in clinical practice, he also provides management consulting and business coaching advice to veterinary practitioners across the country. In financial terms, veterinarians have fallen behind our other professional colleagues and David feels passionately about reversing this trend. He feels strongly that all staff members, as well as owners, should be better rewarded and that this can only come from a progressive and pro-active approach to practice-building.
David is a founding member and director of the AVBA with joint responsibility for the Continuing Education portfolio. He has also been an AVA member since coming to Australia and served for several years on the AVPMA committee
John Odlum BVSc, QDAH, AIMM, MAICD
John has twice been recognised for his services to the profession (AVA - Queensland Division Distinguished Service Award & AVA Meritorious Service Award).
After a long career in general practice, including ten years in full-time practice management, John was involved in the formation, due diligence processes and listing of Greencross Limited. He is now a director of Greencross Ltd and is also its operations’ manager.
John was a founding member of AVPMA and was variously President, Treasurer and in charge of the IR portfolio.
Shane Simpson BVSc(Hons), GCM(VP), CMAVA
Shane is Veterinary Director of Karingal Veterinary Hospital in Frankston, Victoria. Shane is also partner in two other small animal practices which he manages.
Shane was a member of the AVPMA committee and AVPMA Secretary for a number of years.
