Why microchipping is so important

Gladesville Vet Hospital has stray animals brought to us on a daily basis.

Our task is then to try to reunite them with their owners before we are legally obliged to send them to the pound. It is of the utmost importance that all cats and dogs have reliable identification to allow us to do this in a timely manner.

The most reliable means of identification is by microchip. These rice grain-sized devices are easily inserted into the scruff of the neck and can be scanned at vet practices or the pound.

Each microchip comes with a unique number that is linked to your contact details on a computer database, when the forms that you complete are sent off to the microchip register/s.

At GVH we place all animals on the government register (NSW Companion Animals Register) and also a private register that is more easily checked via a 24 hour hotline (Petsafe). Because the microchip only comes up with a number and none of your contact details when it is scanned, it is imperative that you keep your contact details up to date if you move house or change telephone number.
