Winter is Here!
The first cold snap of the season has an unpleasant habit of reminding us about those aches and pains that seem to return with cooler weather! The cause is often arthritis, and when the pain gets severe, we can call our doctor about the problem and seek some relief.
If only things were so easy for your dog! Because incredibly, 20% of all dogs suffer from arthritis, and one in two dogs over the age of six has some form of musculoskeletal problem. But dogs can’t actually tell us what their problem is – it’s up to us to keep our eyes open and look for symptoms. What’s worse, as arthritis develops slowly dogs often adapt to the pain and hide it from you. When they finally let out a whimper, you can be sure the pain is really severe.
We recommend a “winter checkover” at the surgery, particularly if your dog is getting on in years. This will help us spot the early signs of stiff joints, and to recommend a suitable treatment program. This could include some diet changes, exercises for your dog and suitable medication aimed at reducing pain and stiffness.
Why not give us a call at the surgery for an appointment so we can be sure your dog isn’t needlessly suffering this winter. |
