The Difficulty of Reporting on DNA and Human Genome Issues

It is vitally important that matters such as intellectual property (IP) rights granted in areas of DNA and human genome scientific development are robustly aired and discussed.  Because many issues surrounding these areas can be either confusing, complex or easily affected by some common myths, it is easy (and not uncommon) for stories to include assumptions or errors of fact, which tends to only perpetuate myths or inaccuracies.
 
The Institute of Patent and Trademark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA) is uniquely positioned to add explanation, clarity and clarification to such stories. 
 
All Patent Attorneys are either tertiary qualified engineers or scientists who have undertaken specific legal training, so are able to explain both the complex technical and legal aspects of issues.  In IP disputes, different IPTA members can be either working for prosecution or defence, so an IPTA spokesperson is not someone who can take a particular 'side' of an arguement - again leading to you obtaining nothing but facts and clarification.
