IP PROFESSIONALS AND ETHICS

IPRIA / IPTA Seminar

Date:
         Wednesday 18 March 2009
         Melbourne  Blake Dawson

Time:

12.30pm for 1.00pm

The Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia (IPRIA) in association with the The Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA) are hosting a public seminar, to which you are invited.  This seminar is generously hosted by Blake Dawson.

The seminar attempts to bring greater clarity to the issue of conflicts as they relate to patent attorneys, by using practical examples to demonstrate what is meant by a conflict and how it can be identified and managed.  When conflicts of interest are not properly managed the consequences can be severe for intellectual property practitioners and their clients.  While the legal obligations of lawyers in relation to conflicts are fairly well-understood, to date the obligations of patent attorneys have not been as clearly articulated. This seminar will include guidance on practical issues such as effective conflicts checking, use of information screens and informed consent.

Speakers:
Dr Linda Haller, Senior Lecturer, Melbourne Law School, the University of Melbourne
Dr Trevor Davies, Partner, Allens Arthur Robinson Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys

Further details about the seminar and registration form are available www.ipria.org/events/seminar.

This seminar will also run in Brisbane on Monday 9 March and in Sydney on Thursday 19 March.

Continuing Professional Development Professional Standards Board:
The Professional Standards Board for Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys has advised that attendance at this seminar will enable Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys to claim one CPE point.

Law Institute of Victoria:
If these educational activities are relevant to your immediate or long term needs in relation to your professional development and practice of the law, then you should claim one unit for each hour of attendance, refreshment breaks not included.
