Top 20 Offices of Filing
The World International Property Organization (WIPO) says the total number of patent applications filed around the world has been rising steadily, especially over the past 10 years.
While there has been a steady rise in filings by patent applicants in their country of residence, most of the rise in patent filings is coming from non-resident patent filings.
However, WIPO says the distribution of patent filings worldwide remains uneven, with a small number of countries accounting for most patent filings both by residents and non-residents.
The Patent offices of Japan and the US are receiving the largest number of patent applications. North-East Asian emerging countries, particularly China and the Republic of Korea, and large industrialised European countries follow them.
With China and the Republic of Korea becoming major industrial economies - and expanding their use of patents, distribution of filings is changing.
The following WIPO chart shows the top 20 patent offices according to total numbers of patents filed in 2005.
Australia’s total filings rose 3.3 per cent from 2004 to 2005.
