Rangers and Spurs winners in junior soccer

Rangers and Spurs were the two winning teams in round 7 of the Maryborough City “Ready Set Web” under 15 soccer competition. Rangers, in particular were in absolutely sparkling touch defeating Wolves 4 - 0 and Spurs overcame a determined United to win 2 - 1.

The first match of the morning saw Rangers and Wolves clash in a game that was effectively all over by half time. Hayden Carr was in red hot form all day kicking Rangers’ entire score, including a brilliant corner goal early in the first half. Midfielder Jessica Hansen also played well and youngster Gerald Fitzgibbon was really impressive in defence.
Wolves struggled from the start and despite attacking the net on many occasions, just couldn’t find the target. Daniel Potter was the team’s best and Daniel Carless and James Harriott also performed well.

Spurs continued its unbeaten run proving too good for United to win 2 - 1. Goal sneak Nathan Leist was again lethal around the net kicking both of Spurs’ goals. Rugged defender Ned Coverdale was also impressive and is enjoying a top season. Cameron Radnell played perhaps his best game for the year and little dynamo Cory Raats picked up plenty of kicks.
United were certainly competitive all day, but just couldn’t convert when they had the ball in the box. Kyle Thomas used his pace to move the ball forward and keeper Jeremy Dellavedova stood tall all day. United’s only goal came 20 seconds before the final siren when Trent Cardell - Rymer accepted a pinpoint cross from Kyle Thomas to drive the ball home. It was certainly a thrill for Trent as it was his first ever competition goal.

Under 11 competition

The ground was hard and goals were difficult to come by in the majority of under 11 games last weekend. All games were separated by only one goal and one was drawn.

Celtic and Saints set the tone as each team battled hard and plenty of skill was on display. Celtic’s running game was set up by Jonah Healey with great support from Jackson Solomano and Sam Christie with another outstanding game. Saints play a more passing game with Emily Kayes, Lauren Butler and Eruwera Lancaster who had many possessions in the first half. Gradually Saints made chances but shots struck the woodwork three times before Mark Noonan finished neatly with only one minute left.

Forest and United were the only teams to score freely - the game was only two minutes old when a strong run by Jacob Tidyman had the first score on the board. United struck back and goals from Jayden Templeton and Ty Crittle saw them 2-1 up at the half. Jayden Templeton scored the first goal of the second half,  but Forest were not to be denied and Mitchell Fenton and “goal a game” Lewis Rinaldi pulled it back to 3-3. In a game of many stars, Tristin Clarke’s second half performance in goal was outstanding for Forest while United fans were pleased to see Dylan Brereton back to his best.

The game between Gunners and Strikers was a tactical battle which did not deserve a loser. Strikers’ runners were busy early in the game with Matt Gibbs, Patrick Fitzgibbon and Damon Firman prominent. However, Gunners were well organised with Kade Bench a rock in goal and Mitchell Bench using his brains and skill to play last line of defence and constantly repel attacks. They were well supported by Zayne and Tashara Rendell. In the final minute, a last thrust by Strikers saw Mason Norton open her account for the year with a sweet left foot shot to seal the match.

Wolves also were victors by a solitary goal, a first for the year for Tyler Neill. Again, Spurs were unlucky not to share the points with great games from Jordan Gowty, Tyson Beamish and little Tom Coverdale getting some kicks. Wolves continue to improve every week with strong performances from Kallum Dix, Brandon Maffescioni and late entry Jack Bramley picking up possessions.

The final game followed the same pattern with two evenly matched teams battling to the last. The only goal came in the first half from newly converted striker Bailey Gabell who knows where to find the net. City sweeper Coby Perry was again dominant at the back and Josh Diwell provided plenty of drive in midfield. Rangers were hard at the ball all day with Tom Roughead in every play and some good running from Gabby Carter. Isaac Roberts picked up many touches and keeper Lauchie Roberts put in a great second half.

The season in both the under 15 and under 11 competition now has a two week break for school holidays and resumes on July 13th.
