EDITOR CONFIRMS PR OPPORTUNITIES INCREASING

published Feb 01

A former senior Sydney editor has endorsed sentiments expressed in Network’s recent publication ‘NWK’ about the growth in media servicing the consumer and the more PR opportunities this gives organisations- albeit in a backhanded way. Eric Beecher, former Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald and now CEO of Text Media, took a swipe at companies and their PR machines during his delivery of his speech at the annual Andrew Olle Media Lecture at Parliament House.

"The average media consumer has absolutely no inkling to the extent to which stories they see, read or hear have been either instigated, assisted or even managed by the behind-the-scenes PR people whose only interest is to present their clients and their products in a positive light," he said. He then directly endorsed comments made in ‘NWK’ by saying that one reason for the ubiquitous PR fingerprints in the media was the "prodigious increase in lifestyle journalism" such as newspaper sections.

Ironically it was Mr Beecher who introduced to the SMH new lifestyle sections such as Metro and Good Living which provide such fertile grounds for PR exposure.
