Media interviews - the top 5 tips

published Feb 01

Journalists are professionals, just like you. The difference is that their agenda is not necessarily your agenda. Crucial to a successful interview is buying time to properly prepare for it. Here are a few helpful tips.

When they call:

Clearly establish who you will be speaking with and where they are from.
This allows you to research the publication or program as well as the style of the journalist.

Ask for the specific focus of the interview.
Once you know the focus, you will be able to prepare material that is helpful and relevant to the purpose of the interview, rather than just more ‘corporate-speak’. This will also help you avoid making ‘off-the-cuff’ comments.

Ask if there will be any specific questions that will require facts and figures.
If you can support your points with current facts and figures, you will gain credibility as well as the interviewer’s respect.

Determine if other companies are also being interviewed.
If they are, you will want to think how they may approach the subject and craft your material or industry stance accordingly.

Ask when you can call them back.
Don’t expect them to call you back. If the interview is important to you, agree on a time, and keep it!
